Parks Canada Wildfire Updates:

Jasper Complex Wildfire Update

Today crews are taking advantage of the cooler weather to make progress on containing the remaining hotspots in smoldering structures and along the wildfire perimeter closest to the townsite.

Assessments of infrastructure damages are an ongoing process.

Damage within the townsite is estimated at around 30%. Out of a total of 1113 structures within the town, 358 have been destroyed. All critical infrastructure in Jasper were successfully protected including the hospital, the library and the firehall. We are grateful to our responders efforts to contain the fire, minimize the damage and begin to restore essential utilities.

We are empathetic to the residents and businesses seeking more information on specific details on the extent of damage. We are working hard to verify this information and hope to release it soon.

We know people are seeing images on media and social media but what we know about fire incidents is getting the information right is paramount. It takes time to get this information correct, we understand your frustrations and we will publicly share more information when we are in a better position to do so. We want to avoid telling people they lost their home when they didn’t, or saying they didn’t lose their home when they did.

We are finalizing a list of addresses of damaged structures and intend to release it shortly

For individuals who may have left pets behind, the Bylaw Officer will take them to Hinton SPCA. You can call or text 780-852-5518 for updates.

Re-Entry Announcement
August 12, 2024, 10:00 am

By August 16th, 2024, the Incident Management Team plans to meet the Re-entry Criteria. This means Jasper will have the minimum services required to ensure the safety of residents returning.

We are working hard to ensure resident’s have a safe and timely return.
The return date of August 16th is conditional on achieving and maintaining the re-entry criteria. Increased fire activity or unplanned changes to critical services could impact the re-entry date.

Today’s announcement allows you to make travel plans and prepare. We have a guide published online to inform your process, which we will be updating as more details are confirmed from the Incident Management Team.

Trails, campgrounds and day-use areas are not included in this phase of the re-entry process.

There are still many areas in the park that must be assessed for safety. Many risks remain in closed areas, such as ash pits, reduced air quality, hazardous trees and hazardous waste requiring containment. It will take more time for these areas to re-open.

Re-entering Jasper will pose challenges to those who have lost their homes, businesses, and treasured places. We hope this first step brings the community hope.

Facebook Update
August 12, 2024, 1:00 pm

We want to provide more information about the re-entry process.
There is a difference between re-entry and recovery. We are currently still in the Incident phase (pink), and August 16 marks the start of the Re-entry phase (orange).

We understand residents want time and space to return to Jasper. The purpose of re-entry is for residents to return. After re-entry, we can all focus on recovery.

The RCMP have a strong presence in the town, on the highway and at the park’s gates. Their top priority is to keep Jasper secure.

Please continue to check our Re-entry Guide on the website, which provides more details on the re-entry process. We will be updating it daily.

Updated Northwest Perimeter Map, August 12

Firefighters have made significant progress in protecting the town of Jasper and surrounding infrastructure in recent days. The wildfire is still classified out of control and remains estimated at approximately 33,000 ha, however the northwest end of the fire that presents a risk to the townsite is now 99% contained or controlled.

Air and ground operations continue to work together to stop the spread on the north end of the fire, while focusing on the safe return of residents. Yesterday’s air operations included a Black Hawk helicopter which is a utility military helicopter that can perform the equivalent of three medium helicopters. On the ground, five water trucks assisted with fire suppression efforts.

Check Alberta 511 for the latest road updates: https://511.alberta.ca

This map is a best available estimate based on satellite imaging and what crews have been able to see from the ground.

This area is estimated to cover 36,000 hectares.

The outline shown in the map represents an estimate of the furthest area burned, not what is currently burning. It is important to note that this is an estimate and will change. Within the estimated perimeter there will be areas completely burned, partially burned and areas which did not burn at all.

Future maps will be refined when we can map the perimeter from the air.

Update for Residents

Residents and businesses of the town of Jasper, we understand that this is an incredibly difficult and challenging time but our priorities remain addressing the active fire and assessing structural damage in the community. We are happy to report all critical infrastructure has been saved. We appreciate how hard it is to wait for confirmation about your homes.

Our crews continue to fight the fire and we remain focused on making it safe for the people of Jasper to come home. The area remains closed for public safety, evacuation order is still in effect.

Information for Impacted Alberta Residents and Businesses

Provincial Financial Assistance for Jasper Residents

Following the ongoing fire situation at the Jasper townsite and National Park, residents who left their homes as part of the mandatory evacuation order are eligible to receive emergency evacuation payments.

Temporary foreign workers and seasonal workers who were employed and residing in Jasper National Park or Town of Jasper are also eligible for this one-time payment.

Jasper evacuees are being routed to Edmonton, Calgary and Grande Prairie.  Staff at Alberta Supports Centres are available to assist evacuees if needed.  All Albertans who have evacuated their communities due to wildfires can access Alberta Supports offices for in-person assistance.

Alberta Supports office locations and updated hours are available at alberta.ca/alberta-supports.

Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) applicants

Through the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), Alberta’s government is helping applicants whose employment is affected by wildfire evacuations in Alberta.

Applications based on a job offer or residence in an Alberta community that has been evacuated will be held for up to a maximum of one year from any Alberta community’s evacuation date.

Applicants affected by an Alberta wildfire will have one year to prove they meet AAIP criteria. If unemployed due to the effects of the wildfire on businesses, this includes finding a new job in an eligible occupation with an Alberta employer.

Read the Official  AAIP Update

TIAA and our Jasper tourism partners continue to seek further clarification from Federal and Provincial officials on work permit and visa issues.  As more information becomes available we will share with our partners.

Open Work Permit Guidance – Wildfire Impacted Employees

As a temporary special measure to help people directly affected by recent wildfires, the Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP) will accept work permits issued by Immigration, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (IRCC) in the Alberta Opportunity and Tourism and Hospitality Streams. If you’re directly affected by the wildfires and are transitioning from an employer-specific work permit to an open work permit because you are unable to work for your current employer, AAIP will accept the work permit issued under special measures between July 19, 2024 and November 30, 2024. Neither the Rural Renewal nor Express Entry streams have work permit requirements; however, the Alberta Opportunity and Tourism and Hospitality Streams each accept specific work permit types. Open work permits issued by IRCC under these measures will be accepted at any stage of the AAIP process within the Alberta Opportunity and Tourism and Hospitality Streams. All other criteria for each stream continue to apply, along with the temporary measures we introduced on July 26, 2024 to support applicants affected by Alberta wildfires. Update on Waivers of Penalties and Interest Due to Alberta Wildfires

The Alberta government has issued a special notice addressing the impact of recent wildfires on businesses. Treasury Board and Finance, Tax and Revenue Administration (TRA) will consider waiving penalties and interest for those unable to meet tax filing and payment obligations under the Alberta Corporate Tax Act, Fuel Tax Act, Tobacco Tax Act, or Tourism Levy Act due to the wildfires.

The notice provides guidance on waivers of penalties and interest. Affected businesses should file returns and payments promptly. Applications for waivers must include relevant facts and reasons.

This support is crucial for businesses in wildfire-affected areas, offering financial relief and aiding in recovery efforts. TIAA remains dedicated to informing and assisting members during this challenging time.

For more information, please refer to the official notice.

Email Scams Amid Jasper Wildfire Crisis

In light of the ongoing Jasper wildfire crisis, we want to alert you to a recent email scam that has been brought to our attention. Scammers are attempting to exploit the situation by sending emails that appear legitimate.  Check and double check the actual source of the email.

Verify the sender’s email address and look for any inconsistencies.

  2. Be Cautious with Emails and Links

  4. Avoid Downloading Attachments

Do not download attachments from unknown or suspicious emails.

  5. Educate Yourself and Others

Stay informed about the latest scam and phishing techniques.

Response

  1. Do Not Respond

Report it to relevant authorities or organizations, such as your bank and the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.

  3. Delete the Email

After reporting, delete the phishing or scam email to avoid accidentally interacting with it later.

Industry, Visitor & Emergency Resources

Industry and Visitor Facing Resources

Canada and Alberta are vast landscapes.  Alberta alone is almost twice the size of Germany at over 660,000 sq km.

Currently, most areas in Alberta are not experiencing dangerous or smoky conditions due to wildfires. There no additional immediate threats to major tourist destinations. Authorities are continually monitoring wildfire starts to respond quickly.  We continue to safely welcome visitors.

Clear and consistent communication from trusted sources Check and communicate to guests highway delays or closures from the following trusted sources:

Emergency Planning Resources

Stay Updated: Regularly check updates at  Alberta Wildfire and download the Alberta Emergency Alert App

Communicate Effectively: Inform your teams and visitors about current conditions and responsible recreation practices during high fire risk periods.

Consistent Messaging: Ensure clear and consistent messages are delivered from trusted sources to visitors.

Emergency Management Essentials for Tourism Operators

98% of tourism businesses are small businesses in Alberta.  Many operators believe they do not have the resources (time) to develop emergency management plans for their operations, or that they don’t need to plan for an emergency because they are not an accommodation provider.  Emergency management and response is everyone’s responsibility.  In an effort to direct operators to start their planning journey, easily, Travel Alberta and the Alberta Hotel and Lodging Association have high level operator guides as a starting point for operators with limited resources.

TIAA recommends all operators

Develop a Response Plan: Create and regularly update a basic emergency response plan, including evacuation procedures and staff training.

Educate Visitors: Providing clear information from trusted sources on fire safety, wildfire awareness, and emergency protocols at check-in points along their vacation journey enhances both actual and perceived safety.

Strengthen Communication and Collaboration: Establish reliable communication channels with your local Destination Organization (DO, DMOs) and use multiple platforms to keep staff and visitors informed with correct information from trusted sources.

Reservations made directly with hotels and not through Edmonton’s Best Hotels are not eligible for rewards. No exceptions. Rewards are only provided to guests who book through Edmonton’s Best Hotels online booking platform.  Booking reservation confirmations will have Edmonton’s Best Hotels branding on them. Rewards not provided for hotel reservations during specified blackout dates.

Guests may add a night to an existing one-night deal reservation and receive additional rewards if the request is made a minimum of 24 hours in advance of arrival.

Booking terms and conditions

Rewards provided for more than one night, must be for consecutive nights under one registration under one name at one property. In addition, no more than up to three consecutive nights will be honoured. If a guest checks in for three days and then checks out and re-checks in for the next day, this is considered a consecutive night booking even if the second booking is made at different hotel.

There must be a minimum of three days between bookings.

Multiple reservations for the same person for the same night(s) is considered a double booking and only one of those bookings will be eligible for rewards. For example, if a guest books two nights on x and y date and then makes another two-night booking for the same dates at the same hotel or another hotel, EBH considers this a double booking and will honour rewards for only one of those bookings.

Is there a limit on the number of bookings I make on different dates?  Edmonton Best Hotels welcomes repeat business.  Some of our guests visit Edmonton every month.  Please note as stated earlier there must be a minimum of three days between bookings. Please also note stated blackout dates.

Cancelling and date changes to reservations

If a guest wants to cancel or change the dates of their booking.

What if I want to cancel my booking?  Edmonton Best Hotels must cancel your booking (not the hotel).  If you want to cancel, contact info@edmh.ca and let us know.  We will cancel your booking and send you a cancellation number for your records.  Please do not cancel directly with the hotel.

What if I want to change the dates of my booking?  You must contact Edmonton Best Hotels at info@edmh.ca and let us know you want to make a date change.  Your original booking must be cancelled first.  You will receive a cancellation number for your records.  Then, you must rebook for your new dates.  The hotel nor Edmonton’s Best Hotels cannot make date changes to the original booking.  Please note this does not guarantee you will receive the same hotel rate when you rebook for different dates.

Any questions, please contact Edmonton Best Hotels at info@edmh.ca
