Your Edmonton Adventure Starts Here

1. Experience the Magic of the Northern Lights

Imagine this: you’re standing under a wide-open sky, the crisp winter air filling your lungs, when a swirl of greens, pinks, and purples ignites the heavens. Edmonton is one of the few urban centers in the world where you can witness the Aurora Borealis without leaving the city limits.

For a truly enchanting view, take a short drive to Elk Island National Park, where the stars feel close enough to touch and the northern lights dance across the horizon. It’s a bucket-list moment you’ll remember forever.

Pro Tip: Winter is prime time for aurora hunting, so plan your visit between December and February.

2. Explore the River Valley Like Never Before

The North Saskatchewan River Valley is Edmonton’s crown jewel, a lush ribbon of green that’s 22 times the size of New York’s Central Park. In 2025, make it your mission to see the valley from every angle:

  • By foot or bike: With over 150 kilometers of trails, the valley is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts.
  • From the water: Rent a kayak or paddleboard and glide along the river, soaking in views of the skyline and surrounding wilderness.
  • In winter: Try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on trails that transform into a snowy wonderland.

Every season brings its own magic to the River Valley—so why not experience them all?

3. Savour Every Bite of Edmonton’s Culinary Scene

Foodies, rejoice! Edmonton’s culinary scene has blossomed into one of Canada’s most exciting destinations for innovative flavours and fresh, locally sourced ingredients. In 2025, make it your mission to taste the city’s best:

  • Explore 124th Street: This foodie haven is brimming with artisan bakeries, cozy cafes, and upscale bistros.
  • Try the craft beer: Edmonton’s craft breweries are thriving, offering everything from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts.
  • Discover global flavours: From authentic Korean BBQ to modern Indigenous cuisine, Edmonton offers a taste of the world in every bite.

Whatever your palate craves, Edmonton’s dining scene will leave you dreaming of seconds.

4. Go Wild at the Edmonton Valley Zoo

Perfect for families or anyone young at heart, the Edmonton Valley Zoo is a must-see in 2025. With its focus on conservation and education, the zoo offers a chance to connect with animals from around the globe—from playful seals to majestic big cats.

Don’t miss the Polar Extremes exhibit, where you’ll meet Arctic and Antarctic species up close, or the zoo’s seasonal light displays that transform the space into a magical spectacle.

5. Find Serenity at the Muttart Conservatory

Step inside one of Edmonton’s most iconic landmarks, the Muttart Conservatory, and find yourself transported to entirely new worlds. Each of its glass pyramids houses a unique biome, from tropical jungles to arid deserts.

It’s a perfect spot to escape the chill of winter or take a break from summer’s buzz. Bonus: The lush greenery and striking architecture make for Insta-worthy photos.

6. Shop and Stroll at Old Strathcona

Old Strathcona isn’t just a neighborhood—it’s an experience. In 2025, lose yourself in this vibrant district’s blend of history, art, and culture. Explore boutique shops, stop for a coffee in one of its quirky cafes, and catch a live performance at a local theater.

For a truly unique souvenir, visit the Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market, where you’ll find handmade crafts, local produce, and more.

7. Witness Wildlife in Elk Island National Park

Just a short drive from Edmonton, Elk Island National Park offers a chance to reconnect with nature. Watch bison roam freely, hike serene trails, or pack a picnic to enjoy under the open sky.

In 2025, plan a sunset visit—there’s something magical about watching the sun dip below the horizon as herds of bison graze in the distance.

8. Take a Deep Dive into Local History

Edmonton’s history is as fascinating as its modern attractions. Add these stops to your bucket list for a deeper connection to the city’s past:

  • Fort Edmonton Park: Canada’s largest living history museum brings Edmonton’s story to life with costumed interpreters and interactive exhibits.
  • Alberta Legislature Grounds: Tour the stunning Beaux-Arts building or stroll through the surrounding gardens.
  • Royal Alberta Museum: Discover everything from prehistoric fossils to Indigenous artifacts in this state-of-the-art facility.

9. Shop ‘Til You Drop in Edmonton’s Best Districts

Edmonton is a shopper’s paradise, offering everything from local artisan finds to luxury brands and massive shopping destinations. In 2025, carve out time to explore these must-visit shopping hotspots:

  • West Edmonton Mall (WEM): The largest shopping mall in North America isn’t just for shopping—it’s an experience. With over 800 stores, an indoor waterpark, and an ice-skating rink, you could spend days here and never run out of things to do.
  • South Edmonton Common: This open-air shopping destination is perfect for scoring deals at big-name outlets, from designer clothing to tech gadgets. Bonus: it’s family-friendly with dining options for all tastes.
  • 124th Street: If you’re into boutique shopping, this is your spot. Discover locally owned shops offering unique home décor, clothing, and gifts that you won’t find anywhere else.
  • Whyte Avenue (Old Strathcona): A bohemian haven filled with eclectic shops, vintage finds, and quirky bookstores. Combine your shopping trip with a stop at a cozy café or a live performance at one of the nearby theaters.

Whether you’re hunting for souvenirs, treating yourself to a luxury purchase, or simply enjoying the vibrant atmosphere, Edmonton’s shopping scene is worth adding to your itinerary.

10. Discover Edmonton’s Top Parks

Edmonton isn’t just about the River Valley—it’s also home to a variety of parks that showcase the city’s natural beauty and offer spaces to relax, play, and explore. Here are some top parks to visit in 2025:

  • Hawrelak Park: This centrally located gem is a favorite for picnics, festivals, and even ice skating in the winter. Stroll around the pond, bring a frisbee, or simply enjoy the serene surroundings.
  • Rundle Park: Perfect for families, this park features playgrounds, paddle boats, and picnic areas, as well as gorgeous trails along the river.
  • Victoria Park: Nestled near downtown, this park combines green space with incredible views of the North Saskatchewan River. It’s a great starting point for exploring the River Valley.
  • Gold Bar Park: A quieter option for nature lovers, this park is ideal for birdwatching, fishing, or a peaceful walk through nature.

No matter which park you choose, Edmonton’s green spaces are guaranteed to help you recharge and reconnect with the great outdoors.
