Tourism plays a significant role in shaping the world we live in. It has the power to drive economic growth, foster cultural understanding, and promote sustainable practices. Recognizing the efforts of organizations and destinations that excel in these areas is crucial – both in keeping them alive and in letting them know that they are seen and appreciated while ensuring they receive the attention they deserve.
The inaugural Edmonton Tourism Awards (ETA) was held on June 2, 2023, to a sold-out luncheon crowd! The ETA awards recognize exceptional individuals and events that have contributed significantly to the local community and tourism industry. Today we’d like to shine a spotlight on the winners of three prestigious tourism awards: the Sustainable Tourism Award, the Outstanding Contributor to Community Tourism Award, and the Cultural Experience Tourism Award.
Sustainable Tourism Award: River Valley Alliance
The Sustainable Tourism Award celebrates the exceptional efforts made by organizations that prioritize environmental preservation, conservation, and responsible practices within the tourism industry. This year, the well-deserved winner of this accolade is the River Valley Alliance.
They have been dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the North Saskatchewan River Valley in Alberta, Canada. Their commitment to sustainable tourism practices has resulted in the creation of an extensive network of trails, parks, and natural spaces that provide both locals and visitors alike with opportunities for outdoor recreation and appreciation of nature – something we all need. By promoting sustainable transportation options, educating the public, and collaborating with local stakeholders, the River Valley Alliance has become a shining example of how tourism and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
At the forefront of their mission is the RVA’s advocacy for responsible and ethical use of nature’s pathways, minimizing socio-economic and environmental impacts on local athletic groups. Collaborating with six municipalities, the RVA undertakes ongoing projects to establish a world-class attraction that prioritizes ecological protection and land stewardship.
Their initiatives extend beyond advocacy, encompassing education, ambassador programs, and leveraging social media to raise awareness about the significance of becoming a socio-economic champion trail user. Central to their objectives is increasing access to nature and encouraging physical activity, while nurturing connections, preservation, cultural appreciation, and economic diversity throughout the River Valley.
The RVA warmly invites visitors to embrace the beauty of nature, discover personal growth, and actively engage with their communities, all while becoming advocates for the cherished gem that is the Edmonton River Valley. Over the course of 20 years, the RVA has dedicated itself to developing the River Valley Trail, an impressive natural corridor that supports wildlife and has garnered international recognition as one of the largest metropolitan parks globally.
To ensure respectful and thoughtful representation, the RVA actively collaborates with local Indigenous communities, municipalities, and the public in naming the trail. Further encouraging community participation, the RVA has curated a calendar featuring captivating photographs by local photographers, showcasing special trails to explore each month while promoting local photographic talent.
