Experience the Magic of Edmonton’s Winter Festivals

Winter in Edmonton is not just a season—it’s an invitation to experience magic. As snow blankets the city, Edmonton comes alive with festivals that celebrate the beauty, creativity, and wonder of winter. From mesmerizing ice sculptures to enchanting light shows and outdoor family adventures, there’s no shortage of ways to embrace the frosty fun. And the best part? You can explore it all while staying warm and cozy with Edmonton’s Best Hotels as your home base.

Here’s your guide to Edmonton’s winter festivals, complete with tips for making the most of your adventure.

Ice Sculptures That Take Your Breath Away

Picture this: an artist chiseling away at a block of crystal-clear ice, transforming it into a shimmering dragon, an intricate castle, or a delicate flower. Edmonton’s ice sculpting competitions are nothing short of magical.

One highlight you won’t want to miss is Boardwalk Ice on Whyte, an internationally renowned ice carving festival. Here, master carvers from around the world showcase their stunning creations, often illuminated for extra sparkle at night. Wander the festival grounds, marvel at the craftsmanship, and even try your hand at carving with interactive workshops.

Pro Tip: Visit after dark for an unforgettable experience as the sculptures glow under colourful lights. Don’t forget to bundle up—mittens, insulated boots, and a thermos of hot cocoa are your best friends!

Location: Whyte Avenue

Light Shows That Spark Wonder

Edmonton’s long winter nights are the perfect canvas for dazzling light shows that will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairytale.

Then, head to Glow Edmonton, an indoor holiday light festival featuring millions of twinkling lights, whimsical displays, and family-friendly attractions. Whether you’re snapping photos in the illuminated tunnels or watching the kids navigate glowing obstacle courses, this festival is a feast for the senses.

Pro Tip: Glow Edmonton is indoors, making it a great option if you’re looking for a cozy escape from the cold!

Outdoor Winter Adventures for Everyone

Edmonton’s winter festivals aren’t just about admiring the beauty of the season—they’re also about getting outside and embracing it.

Flying Canoë Volant is a uniquely Edmonton experience that blends French-Canadian, Indigenous, and Métis culture into one unforgettable event. Wander through a snow-covered ravine lit by lanterns, enjoy storytelling around a fire, and join in on the interactive activities for all ages.

Dates: Jan 29 – Feb 1 2025

Location: Mill Creek Ravine

For families, Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival is a must. This free event is brimming with snow carvings, live music, street hockey games, and sleigh rides. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the diverse cultures that make Edmonton special while having some frosty fun.

Pro Tip: Layer up with thermal clothing and a windproof jacket. Bring hand warmers for kids to keep little fingers toasty during outdoor play.
