Iconic Rodeo Events and Competitions
The Edmonton Pro Rodeo features a wide range of events that showcase the incredible talents and bravery of rodeo athletes. From bull riding, where riders attempt to stay on a bucking bull for eight seconds, to barrel racing, where cowgirls navigate a cloverleaf pattern at breakneck speeds, each event requires immense skill and courage. Here’s a glimpse at some of the show-stopping events you’ll get to see at this year’s rodeo:
Bull Riding – Presented by Edmonton’s Best Hotels
Bull riding is one of the most exhilarating and dangerous events in rodeo. It requires nerves of steel and impeccable balance as cowboys attempt to stay on a bucking bull for a full eight seconds. The Edmonton Pro Rodeo showcases the best bull riders in the country, providing an adrenaline-pumping experience for both participants and spectators. The EPR Bull Riding Event is a qualifier for the Canadian Finals Rodeo.
Bareback Riding
In bareback riding, cowboys ride untamed horses without a saddle. They must maintain their balance while the horse bucks and twists, showcasing their strength and agility. This event is a true test of athleticism and provides a breathtaking display of horsemanship.
Barrel Racing
Barrel racing is a fast-paced and exciting event that showcases the bond between a rider and their horse. Competitors navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels, racing against the clock. Precision, speed, and agility are key in this thrilling event.
Steer Wrestling
Steer wrestling, also known as bulldogging, is a true display of strength and technique. Cowboys must leap off their horse onto a running steer, grab its horns, and bring it to a stop as quickly as possible. This event requires precision timing and immense physical strength.
Roping Events
Roping events, including tie-down roping, breakaway roping and team roping, highlight the skills of both the rider and their horse. In tie-down roping, a cowboy or cowgirl must lasso a calf and quickly dismount to tie its legs together. Team roping involves two riders working together to rope a steer, one roping the horns and the other roping the hind legs. Breakaway roping is a rodeo event that features a calf and one mounted cowgirl. The roper must throw the rope in a loop around the calf’s neck. Once the rope is around the calf’s neck, the roper signals the horse to stop suddenly. The rope is tied to the saddle horn with a string. When the calf hits the end of the rope, the rope is pulled tight and the string breaks.
Saddle Bronc
In rodeo’s classic event, the saddle bronc rider sits on a specialized saddle – it has no horn, and the stirrups are set forward. In the chute, the cowboy adjusts his grip on the rein and perhaps the horse’s position. When the gate opens, his boots must be above the breaks of the horse’s shoulders. After the horse’s first move, usually a jump, the cowboy begins spurring in long, smooth strokes, in sync with the horse’s jumps – legs straight when the bronc comes down, toward the back of the saddle at the top of the jump.
