Whether you’re catching live hockey, enjoying Edmonton’s winter wonderland, or indulging in the city’s vibrant downtown scene, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

And why let the fun end when the clock strikes midnight? Whether you’re a visitor or a local, booking a stay at one of Edmonton’s Best Hotels makes your New Year’s celebration seamless and stress-free. Let’s dive into the confirmed details and the best ways to make this New Year’s Eve unforgettable.

1. New Year’s Eve in Edmonton: Celebration Ideas

  • Catch the Edmonton Oilers vs. Utah Hockey Club Game
Start your New Year’s Eve with an exhilarating game of hockey! The Edmonton Oilers will face the Utah Hockey Club on December 31, 2024, at Rogers Place. This game is part of the Oilers’ regular season schedule and offers the perfect way to kick off your night in the heart of the Ice District.
  • Ice District and Downtown Fun
After the game, the Ice District transforms into a vibrant hub of New Year’s Eve excitement. With its mix of trendy restaurants, stylish bars, and entertainment options, it’s the ultimate place to celebrate before or after midnight. From craft beer at local breweries to cocktails at chic lounges, there’s a venue for every vibe.
  • Embrace Edmonton’s Winter Magic
For those who love the outdoors, Edmonton’s parks and skating trails provide a magical winter setting. Glide under twinkling lights at Victoria Park Oval or follow the icy trails of the Rundle Park Iceway. These family-friendly spots stay open late, making them perfect for a festive evening activity.
  • Quiet Escapes at Elk Island National Park
If you’re looking for something quieter, consider heading to Elk Island National Park. Known for its pristine dark skies, it’s a stunning location for stargazing and reflecting on the year that’s passed.
  • Stay Tuned for Fireworks Announcements
In previous years, Edmonton has hosted fireworks displays over the River Valley and other downtown locations. While official announcements for 2024’s New Year’s Eve fireworks are still pending, stay updated by visiting the City of Edmonton website (edmonton.ca).

2. Keep the Celebration Going: Things to Do on New Year’s Day

Start 2025 on the right note with these fun and relaxing activities:

  • Skate Into the New Year
Lace up your skates and hit the ice at Victoria Park Oval or the Iceway at Rundle Park. These scenic outdoor rinks offer a magical winter experience surrounded by the city’s natural beauty.
  • Savour a New Year’s Day
Edmonton is home to some incredible brunch spots, perfect for fuelling up after a night of celebration. Check out The Butternut Tree for locally sourced dishes and stunning River Valley views, Under the High Wheel for comforting farm-to-table fare, or Little Brick Café, a cozy spot in a historic brick house. Make a reservation early to secure your spot.
  • Explore Winter Attractions
Visit the Muttart Conservatory for a warm escape into its lush indoor gardens, or enjoy a winter walk through the city’s parks. For something more magical, keep an eye on whether the Ice Castles will be open for the season (weather permitting).
